After my anxiety about a new med, questioning my pdoc's judgement, etc, I seem to be feeling great! For now. I am on Lamictal and Prozac for BP2 and PMDD, and it seems to be a good combo.

I am glad I listened to everyone's advice about telling my pdoc everything, and not "editing" out some so she wouldn't add the antidepressant. Thank you forum. It seems silly, but I guess I am really stubborn, and I tend to be a bad patient and want to make my own medical decisions :)

I am a little nervous about my cycle staring in two days or so, because I undergo such a dramatic mood shift immediately. Last month, the first day of my cycle was when I wigged out on Citalopram and was having the violent thoughts out of nowhere. I hope this isn't the case with the prozac.

Any ideas?

No ideas myself here, being that I am male I don't have the experience to offer anything but my best wishes for you remaining on an even keel. Good luck and stay positive.

I'm in a good place too with my meds. I say just enjoy your current stable life and don't think about your period. Just live day by day and try to have a positive outlook. My periods doesn't always affect my mood.

carrie,

I am so glad that the anxiety has left. As I have stated, I believe that we give ourselves the best chance for stability if we are completely honest and compliant toward our treatment. Our doctors are only as good as we let them be.

While I have no personal reference concerning PMS, I do note on a Mayo Clinic website that ADs are used to treat it. Please believe that, just because Celexa was a bad choice for you doesn't mean that all ADs will cause the same result. Prozac is a great drug and has been around for quite a while. I pray that it will do the trick for you.

Take care of yourself.

Thanks for your responses! They are reassuring. Hopefully the prozac won't wig me out. I guess I will know in a day or two for sure!

@Bob,
Are things improving for you?

@Carrie,

Thank you for asking. At the moment I am better emotionally. The mixed episode seems to have abated and I am feeling better about myself. The sense of uselessness has passed, at least for now. I am getting better sleep and feeling balanced during the day. All of this is good.

However, physically I am doing poorly. I suffered a severe injury to my back in 1988 that caused me to go on long term disability in 1994. I have had chronic pain since. Here lately, the painful sensations in my legs have been increasing, to the point where doing my exercises actually hurt me more than they help. My pain is pretty constant, and since I am a recovering alcoholic, I won't take anything more powerful than Tylenol. I may have to go back to my stick (cane).

I also have a difficult month ahead of me. I have taken a break from my support group, so I won't have those meetings to help me stay balanced. I am already receiving calls from my friends there, but I won't get the feedback I usually have from facilitating the group. My wife is going to visit family on the 19th and will be gone for around three weeks. I always go mixed when she is gone. Don't know why, just do. My therapist will be unavailable for the next two weeks, so I won't have her. And our finances make it clear that I have to quit smoking, something I haven't been able to do in 25 years of trying.

So I am going to go to more AA meetings, keep busy with my friends and try to use all of the tools I have picked up over the last nine years. I know I will be okay. The only real concern is if I have a major breakdown when my wife is gone. She will have to rush back, not for me but to take care of the dog (LOL). But I know that I have the tools I need to maintain during a crisis and get through it, so I am not worried.

Again, thanks for asking about me. It is terrific to have good friends, even if they are cyber.

Take care.

Hi Bob,

I am glad your mood is better! It was definitely a chemical imbalance telling you you were not helpful. That is so far from the truth.

Sorry your physical ailments are acting up. I hope the docs can help with that.

As far as your wife traveling, when does she leave? Do you find that anything helps alleviate the episodes when she's gone? You should keep posting on here during that time so we know where you are at.

Carrie

carriel- WooHoo!! I'm glad that you're in a good place and have been honest with your pdoc about everything. This probably helped get you the right combo of meds.

Don't stress yourself out too much about your PMS, which is really easy to do. But if you psych yourself out too much, it might happen because you're expecting it. I don't know if that makes sense haha

rjmhaley- I'm sorry to hear about the physical pain you're in. And in the next month, please check in here regularly like carriel said so we can support you if we can. It sounds like there will be a lot of changes going on at one time so make sure you do what you have to to self-preserve and take care of yourself...and the dog too ;)
