I am new to this site..diagnosed bi-polarll in 2000..suffered since 1990. My question is about interupted sleep. I take 100 mgs seroquel,50 mg. trazodone, and 1mg. xanax at night for sleep. I wake up like 4 hours after I go to sleep,am up for about 1.5-2 hours, then this morning back to sleep for 4 hours. I wish I could just get a straight 8 hours. Very soon I will be going back to work and this interupted sleep isnt gonna cut it at all. Any suggestions. I dont go back to p-doc til march 12th.

I have the same problem. I'm planning on adding folic acid to my supplement program because it is suppose to help with anxiety. With less anxiety I'm hoping that I will FINALLY be able to sleep like a "normal" person.

Hi Heather,

I suffered with bipolar II for over two decades before I was diagnosed, and it was the sleep disorder that FINALLY got someones attention about my proper diagnosis. So, I have been diagnosed since July of 2007.

Sleep is precious. Sleep is 100% necessary. Our culture does not honor that nearly enough. Those of us who have genuine sleep disorders are often seen as whiny when we talk about not being able to get a good night's sleep, because most people only know that as a fleeting occurrence. I wish.

I have three suggestions for you to talk to your Pdoc about.

1) GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)- I have been doing some research on that myself and am interested in giving it a try. It is a supplement that you can buy over the counter that works as a "natural" sleep aid. GABA is a naturally occurring neurotransmitter in the body that plays a role in the sleep/wake cycle. I will not take it until I talk to my Pdoc.

2) Melatonin - I have tried melatonin with no results. However, others swear by it. It is a metabolic hormone that plays a role in setting your body clock. Lots of people who travel across time zones use it to help them overcome jet lag. It helps them get a night's sleep even in the wrong time zone because it fools their body clock into thinking it's time to sleep "now!"

3) Increase your Seroquel. My Pdoc gives me an Rx of seroquel that allows me to manage my dose from 100mg to 300mg depending upon how I am sleeping. When I am sleeping well, 150mg will get me through the night. When I get into a jag of bad nights (or weeks), I increase the dose. When my sleep is bad, 300mg will give me longer nights of sleep. I appreciate that my Pdoc gives me that kind of flexibility with my meds. It helps me. When I am sleeping well, 300mg is just TOO much... I feel groggy and sedated the next day. When I am sleeping poorly, 150mg wouldn't keep me asleep for 3 hours.

Ambien and all those that are like Ambien are really poor choices for those of us with genuine sleep disorders. Ambien has a maximum half life of 4 hours. For me, that meant at 4 hours and 1 minute... I was awake... wide awake. I tried Ambien CR.... with it's half life of 6 hours. Okay...well.. at 6 hours and 1 minute, I was awake. Six hours is an improvement, but it is not enough for me to meet the demands of my high-pressure, high responsibility job.

I wish you the best in finding your solution. Getting good sleep is worth the effort. Your brain and your body will thank you!

Be well,
Jules

Thanx Jules!!!! Your response was veryyyy helpful!!!! I have tried ambienCR in the past....didnt help me at all!!!!! I just recently got back from colorado and my sleep was totally messed up there, just with the 2 hour difference. I called the doc from there and she told me to just wait and my body would adjust. I ended up coming home 10 days early, not because of that but other reasons. My sleep was still not the greatest before i went there. The last 2 nights I have taken 3mg melatonin and it does seemed to have helped. I didnt want to up my seroquel(only on 100 at night)cuz she told me not too right now. I dont see the pdoc again til march 12th. Gaba I have heard of but didnt know it was related to sleep. I will ask the doc about that if the melatonin doesnt continue to work. YES..my sleep is sooooo very important to me..it really makes or breaks the day. Right now am not working, but am looking for a job as of today..and I really need to get my sleep regulated!!

Thanx again for your reply...very insightful!!!!!

Heather:)

GABA is helping me but not quite enough

Melatonin works for a few days but the I seem to get more irritable

Seroquel caused INSANE eating binges but I keep it on hand as my med of last resort if I go 2 days without quality sleep.

Ambien was HORRIBLE for me.

OTC meds have zero effect.

I hope the folic acid helps. If not I will try increasing my GABA again. I am already at 2g. My chart doesn't look that bad but my sleep is not consecutive. I often wake up for 2 or more hours before I'm able to get back to sleep.

Hi Heather,
i actually dont think i really have anything useful to say lol i just wanted to thank u for asking this question, because ive been having the same EXACT sleep patterns for awhile now. its so great to kno that other people are having the same problems. im also diagnosed bp2, but sometimes i wonder if my last hypomanic episode was bad enough to be bp1. i guess thats the trouble with diagnosing, u dont always fit into perfect little boxes!

anyway i have been sleeping thru the night moreso the last couple days- im now on 100mg of zoloft at night, and 5mg abilify in the morning. im still getting used to it tho, as the abilify is making me way more tired than usual. last week i was sleeping 5-6 hours a night for a few days in a row, and then i started abilify, and i slept 11 hours! go figure.

good luck with everything, there is hope! it just takes us all some time to figure out what works best.

Hey there, I am a newbie here.

I have some serious trouble with sleep, been with insomnia for 12 yrs.
It seems like my body is becoming inmune to sleep meds.
Believe me, I have tried every single remedy available in the market, prescription , otc and natural.
For example, last night I took 150mg Vistaril, 6mg Xanax, 97.2mg Phenobarbital & 300mg Lyrica.
Just slept for two hours.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Blessings to all...

Whoa...6mg. of xanax. Have you been taking xanax along time? I've been upped to 200mg trazodone now and it has helped. I take 1mg.xanax,that helps me get to sleep...but the trazodone and seroquel(low dose) keep me asleep. Are you bi-polar? Have you ever tried trazodone? Thats non-addictive and can go up to 400mg.

Yes. I've been on xanax for almost ten years. I have also tried Seroquel from 100 to 600mg and wored a little but can no longer take it because I am Diabetic, the same thing happens with Zyprexa.

I have tried trazodone a while back but didn't help much.

By the way tonight I will try Trazodone again with Vistaril, Ambien CR and Klonopin

My doc and I are going through the second round of meds,, LOL

Thank u very much Heather.

You have a new pal here in the Tropics, Caribbean

I avoid light an hour before I want to fall asleep by putting on a blind-fold. I take GABA, magnesium, Calcium, 5HTP, Taurine and Folic Acid that help promote sleep. Also walking outside in the early am helps natural melatonin cycle. I take melatonin occasionally (no more than 3 nights in a row) but it only helps me fall asleep not stay asleep.

Hello Heather and everyone else!

My new combo really worked last night.

The combination of Ambien CR, Klonopin, Vistaril, Lyrica and Trazodone worked very well.

I hope it keeps working the same way it did last night.

I feel awesome today.

Blessings to all...

Hello Heather and everyone else!

My new combo really worked last night.

The combination of Ambien CR, Klonopin, Vistaril, Lyrica and Trazodone worked very well.

I hope it keeps working the same way it did last night.

I feel awesome today.

Blessings to all...

Hi group, I was reading and read something from * Kef * that had posted all the meds. that they are taken. It was Yebra Mate, Iron, Soil Based Organism and may more. I was wondering if this really helps with the bipolar. For, I do not have insurance due to my husband's work closeing the doors. I know I need something to help me. Any information would be a delight. Thank you in advance.

It took a lot of research and months of trial and error to fine tune, but yes my current more natural treatment plan is working better for me than any of the prescription meds I've been on and cost less than $80 per month. I buy nearly all my supplements through www.swansonvitamins.com .

I have more of an issue with depression than mania and several of the things I take (SAMe, B complex, B12, Yerba Mate, Omega 3) may trigger mania in some people. It takes a lot of commitment to develope a supplement plan that works for you as an individual.

The most important and safest place to start is Omega 3 (3/2 EPA/DHA ratio), Vitamins C, D, E, Bcomplex in the morning and GABA, magnesium, folic acid at night. But do your own research on anything before you attempt it!

As you can tell from my chart I'm having some depression lately because I haven't been able to restart my exercise routine since my back went out in May. Exercise and quality sleep are probably the 2 most important factors.

It actually only took about a month for my back to get back to 100%, but I just haven't been able to make exercise a priority like I should since breaking the habit for so long and I put on 10 pounds during the ordeal as well. I've been procrastinating again today.

I'm going to go stretch and go for a walk right now. I'll let you know if I actually make it out my front door.

I haven't posted on this thread since February, so I thought I'd swing back through and add a little more.

My sleep is marvelously stable right now. It isn't quite as much as I would LIKE to get, but it is enough. I'm not feeling horrible and sluggish during the day. When I get less than 6 hours per night, then I'm in trouble. Lately my sleep as been steady between about 6 hours and 7.5 hours. That will do.

Currently my sleep medications are VERY simple... Seroquel 100mg to 200mg, depending upon how I am doing. That is WAY better than the multiple things that I used to take. I recently even took as much as 300mg of Seroquel when things weren't going well, sleep-wise. But, that dose is no longer prescribed or necessary.

Now.... here's the trick... let's see how I do in the fall. Fall has historically been a horrible time for me. My depression nearly takes over my life, including my sleep (or lack thereof). I'm hoping for a better fall this year. I've never gone into fall feeling as well as I do right now. This will be my third fall since diagnosis. We understand a lot more about my cycles.

Thanks for this thread. I think it is a very important one.

Be well,
Jules

I'm coveting your mood chart Jules. I have never been that stable at any point in my life.

Kef,

All I can say is that I am grateful. I feel completely blessed to be stable at this point in my life. After my diagnosis, I didn't know it could or would happen.

I have just completed writing one of my journal stories (I journal by telling my stories, not neccesarily "typical" entries). This story marks the 3-year anniversary of my diagnosis and my journey to this point. I have thought about posting it here, but it is quite long. Anyway, writing my story brought me to a deeper place of thankfulness about my currently calm waters. Calm waters have not been a part of my experience for quite a while.

Be well,
Jules
